The complete bird-watching guide for beginners

Bird-watching or the field observation of birds is an educative, exciting, healthy, inexpensive  and rewarding hobby enjoyed by millions of all ages the world over. Bird-watching requires no formal training. It only requires keen interest, patience and practice. Birds of India brings you a section devoted to the novice birder - someone who is just getting interested in the amazing feathered world around us.

We hope you will find your time here well spent and our reward would be to add newcomers to the ranks of  those who love and care for the feathered kind.

Happy birding!

Binoculars
Recommendation: 8x36 or 8x40 Porro prism binoculars of an established brand like Pentax, Nikon, Olympus, Bushnell etc. Read more about choosing the one that suits you best here

Books
Recommendation: There is no really good up to date book for beginners covering Indian birds. The most suitable is the Collins Handguide to the Birds of the Indian Sub Continent by Martin W. Woodcock. Unfortunately, this 176 page paperback (ISBN-10: 0828907250) covering 273 common species is now out of print, but copies are sometimes available. Salim Ali's The Book of Indian Birds  together with R. Grimmett, C. Inskipp & T. Inskipp's  Pocket Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent will also meet most needs. Both are easily available and are competitively priced.
