Species details
The larger of
the two flamingo species that are found in India, the Greater is a
wanderer erratically appearing and disappearing from mudflats and
saltpans over much of western India. However, the dirty stagnant waters
of the Yamuna at New Delhi are a favoured habitat, and the species can
be seen here not only in winter but at other times as well. This
110cm species breeds in Kutch on deserted saline flats. Sexes are
similar.
